The United Nations condemns in the strongest terms the targeted killing of Hanifa Safi, the Head of the Department of Women’s Affairs (DOWA) of Laghman province. On 13 July, a remote control IED detonated inside Ms. Hanifa’s vehicle in Mehtarlam city, Laghman province, killing her and injuring her husband, daughter and six other civilians.

Since her appointment in 2008, Ms. Hanifa has worked tirelessly to promote and protect women’s rights in Afghanistan.

“The United Nations is gravely concerned about ongoing targeted killings of civilians,” said Jan Kubis, the UN’s Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan. “The deliberate killing of a brave woman and a public servant dedicated to improving the situation of Afghan women and working for the safety and security of her country, is an outrage. Those who perpetrated this egregious crime must be brought to justice.”

The United Nations extends its condolences to those injured, including Ms. Hanifa’s family members, and wishes her husband and daughter a speedy recovery.
